The Most Effective Strategic Planning Process I Have Ever Used
I am a Chartered Accountant with over 40 years of post qualification experience, 9 in the profession with Thomson McLintock (now KPMG), 10 with a public company retailer and the last 25 as a self employed consultant to SME’s where I not only provide advice but where appropriate I become an investor and join the Board to implement the new business plan.
I first met Ian Brown (owner and MD of 2112 Consulting) in 1999 when I was introduced to the senior members of staff of a long established Glasgow based firm of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys who were going through a Management Buy Out (MBO). Using the strategic planning process known as “Journey Making”, Ian worked closely with me to produce a business plan for the MBO. Based on this plan, the MBO was funded by The Royal Bank of Scotland along with other equity investors.
I believe that the process that Ian employs (and is a leading expert in) is the most robust planning tool I have come across in all my years of producing corporate plans and I have since worked with Ian on a number of other strategic interventions and business plans, all of which have been successfully financed.
I fully subscribe to the benefits from using this process for creating business strategy and plans for any type or size of business in any sector. In addition, I would add that it captures and retains information which can be used to create and update strategic plans in the future so it is a method that can be used over time to continually evaluate and develop the business’ strategic plans. It also provides the basis for review of actual outcomes compared with expectations and allows a higher level of participation for all levels of staff within the business.
I have now worked with Ian in a variety of businesses and both the process and Ian, as the exponent of and expert in the process, have proved to be appropriate and relevant. Ian has shown himself to be able to adapt to many different business types and situations.
I completely endorse Ian Brown, his business and the ‘Journey Making’ process to any management team that is genuinely seeking to improve their business, understand where they want it to be, determine where it is now and agree on how to move it from there it is to whey they want it to be. He can also help identify and build the business’ USP and what it has to do to grow and optimise the return for its stakeholders.
